Your personal Mission Statement answers one simple question:

Why are you here on this Planet Earth?

Your Mission Statement expresses your true essence.

I love Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach. It comes the closest to being my personal bible. Its premise is that we choose our particular lives before we were even born, and we do it because we have a few specific life-lessons to learn. The rub is that in our day-to-day low level of consciousness, we have forgotten that it was us who chose this life!

You may disagree with that worldview, and that is OK. I am not offering it as a literal truth, but rather as a metaphorical truth. In other words, what I am asking you to do is pretend it is true.

Pretend you chose this life and the particulars of your life. What do they say about you? What did come here to learn? What gives you goosebumps? What makes you cry? This game of pretend yields many powerful benefits. It helps you discover your essence, that part of you that embodies your highest self. It also brings clarity to your day-by-day lives by showing you what you need to do to live at your best. It all starts with building your Mission Statement.

You're on a Mission!

How do you create one? You look for clues in your own life. They will always be your best source for ideas. Ask yourself:
  • What have I always loved?
  • What gives me that visceral feeling of happiness - or giddiness even?
  • What are my unique strengths and talents?
  • What famous people (living or dead) or even movie characters do I want to be? What traits do I want to emulate?
  • What do I get complimented on by others?

The most powerful - and useful! - Mission Statements have a few characteristics:

  • They incorporate your Core Values.
  • They are short. 3 to 5 sentences are plenty to express your personal mission.
  • They are positive. They describe what you want to be, rather than what you don't want to be.
  • They are about who you are "being", rather than "doing". They encapsulate your essence, strengths and talents, rather than what you do or your career.
  • And finally, they are emotional. When you read yours (which you should do often), it should give you the goosebumps!
The "perfect" Mission Statement is not easy to write! It takes a lot of work and introspection - and a whole lot of time and patience! - to narrow down the infinite facets & depth of your life to a short paragraph. But all that investment is completely worth it.

Cut to the Chase

When asked how he created those beautiful sculptures, Michelangelo is reported to have said, "I see the sculpture in that block of stone and all I do is to chip away the stuff that does not belong!"
A great Statement of mission is just like that. It brings your entire life in focus. It provides you with a lens to decide what you want to do in life.

The decision process becomes simple: if it is in alignment with your Mission Statement, do it. If not, don't!

I hope you see how this process can help you on your path to financial freedom. More than anything else, the journey to financial freedom needs a compelling WHY. A simple, short and powerful Mission Statement gives you that clarity and focus and ensures that you stay true to that course.
