Know Thyself!

The gateway to the temple of Apollo at Delphi says: "Know thyself". In fact that is held out as an ideal in most cultures around the world. So what's the deal with knowing thyself? Why should we pay attention to this old adage? Quite apart from the philosophical overtones, there are many practical advantages to it. As this Wikipedia entry says:

[...] the saying may refer to a less ambitious ideal, such as knowing one's own habits, morals, temperament, ability to control anger, and other aspects of human behavior that we struggle with on a daily basis.

The path to financial freedom is not an easy one. It involves serious introspection and discipline. It takes commitment to develop great financial defense habits. It takes a lot of dedicated work to build streams of passive income. It takes all your resources - internal and external - to become financially free. (It also takes good accountability structures that ensure that you stay on track.)

This is why I think knowing thyself is an essential piece of the puzzle. This piece is all about knowing your strengths and weaknesses, your desires and ambitions - and knowing why you want financial freedom in the first place!

As renowned personal development guru Jim Rohn puts it:

The bigger the "why", the easier the "how".

Knowing thyself builds a compelling WHY, and then it is not that difficult to research and acquire the necessary tools.

Coming to know thyself is an on-going process. It consists of gaining clarity about your life using concepts and tools such as:

Building a Strong Foundation: As we work on bringing the unresolved issues in our lives - which could be related to health, wealth, relationships or physical environment - to a satisfactory completion, we are able to attract exactly what we want.
Discovering your Core Values: What motivates you? If a gun was put to your head and you had to choose your top 3 values, what would you choose?
Crafting your Mission Statement: What are you on this Earth for? Now I don't believe that it is literally true that we came here on a mission. But we can find out what energizes us, what brings out the best in us and what makes us feel whole. When we do that, we connect with an enormously powerful source of psychic energy.
Creating your Vision Board: Your Vision Board is a visual manifestation of your ideal life. Do you know what your ideal life is filled with?

This whole process is all about the dictum we started with: Know thyself! And once you have created a compelling WHY, your path to financial freedom becomes effortless.
